Toplama

Toplama is a Turkish term primarily referring to the mathematical operation of addition, the process of computing the sum of two or more numbers. In a broader sense, it also means gathering, compiling, or aggregating items or data. The word derives from the Turkish root top- meaning to gather, with the nominalizing suffix -lama to form an abstract noun.

In mathematics, toplama is a binary operation that combines numbers to produce their sum. It is defined on standard number systems (integers, rationals, real numbers, complex numbers) and extends to vectors and matrices by component-wise addition. The operation is commutative and associative and has 0 as the additive identity: a + 0 = a. Subtraction serves as the inverse operation of addition.

Decimal addition uses place value and carrying when sums exceed 9. It is foundational in arithmetic education and underpins broader areas such as algebra, accounting, and many computational routines.

Beyond pure arithmetic, toplama also denotes aggregation or compilation of data or items, such as veri toplama (data aggregation) or liste toplaması (gathering a list). In Turkish usage, the term thus covers both the arithmetic sum and the act of collecting or compiling information or objects.

In education and everyday use, toplama is introduced early as a basic arithmetic skill and remains important for tasks ranging from simple calculations to data analysis and record-keeping.
