Toisiovälittäjäaineet, also known as secondary messengers, are intracellular signaling molecules that are produced or released in response to an initial extracellular signal, such as a hormone or neurotransmitter binding to a cell surface receptor. These molecules amplify and diversify the signal initiated by the primary messenger, leading to a cascade of cellular responses.

Common examples of toisiovälittäjäaineet include cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), inositol trisphosphate (IP3), and diacylglycerol (DAG).
