Toennäköisyysnäytteenotto, often translated as probability sampling, is a fundamental technique in statistical research where each member of a population has a known, non-zero chance of being selected for a sample. This known probability is crucial as it allows researchers to make statistically valid inferences about the entire population based on the characteristics of the sample. In contrast to non-probability sampling methods, probability sampling aims to minimize selection bias, ensuring that the sample is representative of the population.

There are several common types of probability sampling. Simple random sampling involves selecting individuals purely by chance, much like drawing names from a hat. Stratified sampling divides the population into subgroups, or strata, based on shared characteristics (e.g., age, gender, income), and then draws a random sample from each stratum. This ensures that specific subgroups are adequately represented in the sample. Cluster sampling involves dividing the population into clusters, often geographically, and then randomly selecting entire clusters to be included in the sample. Systematic sampling selects individuals at regular intervals from an ordered list of the population.

The primary advantage of probability sampling is its ability to provide a strong basis for generalization. The mathematical properties of probability sampling allow researchers to calculate sampling error and confidence intervals, which quantify the uncertainty associated with generalizing findings from the sample to the population. This makes probability sampling the preferred method for quantitative research aiming for generalizability and statistical rigor.
