Tilleggsfarger

Tilleggsfarger, a Norwegian term, translates to complementary colors in English. Complementary colors are pairs of colors that, when combined or mixed, cancel each other out by producing a grayscale color like white or black. When placed next to each other, they create the strongest contrast for those two colors. This effect is often used in art and design to make colors appear more vibrant.

The most common complementary color pairs are derived from the color wheel. Red and green are a classic example, as are blue and orange, and yellow and violet. Each primary color has a secondary color as its complement. For instance, red (a primary color) is complemented by green (a secondary color made from blue and yellow). Similarly, blue is complemented by orange, and yellow is complemented by violet.

The concept of complementary colors is based on human color perception. When the eye is exposed to one color for an extended period, it will start to perceive its complementary color. This phenomenon is known as an afterimage. Artists utilize this principle to create visual effects and enhance the intensity of their work. In graphic design and web development, understanding complementary colors is crucial for creating aesthetically pleasing and impactful designs.
