Tilavuusmääritys

Tilavuusmääritys, often translated as volumetric analysis or titration, is a common analytical chemistry technique used to determine the unknown concentration of a solution, known as the analyte, by reacting it with a solution of known concentration, called the titrant. The process involves carefully adding the titrant to the analyte until the reaction between them is complete. This point of completion is called the equivalence point.

To accurately determine the equivalence point, an indicator is often used. Indicators are substances that change color at or very near the equivalence point, signaling that the reaction is complete. Alternatively, instruments like pH meters or conductivity meters can be used to monitor the reaction and detect the equivalence point. The volume of titrant added to reach the equivalence point is precisely measured.

Using the known concentration of the titrant and the measured volume of titrant added, along with the stoichiometry of the reaction between the analyte and titrant, the unknown concentration of the analyte can be calculated. Common types of titrations include acid-base titrations, redox titrations, precipitation titrations, and complexometric titrations, each utilizing different types of chemical reactions.
