Tilastossa

Tilastossa is a Finnish linguistic form used in statistical discourse. It is not a separate object or entity, but the inessive case form of the noun tilasto, meaning “statistic” or “statistics.” The form translates roughly as “in statistics” or “in the statistics” and is used to situate information within statistical data or reports.

Etymology and morphology: Tilasto comes from the Finnish word for statistic, and the suffix -ssa marks the inessive case, indicating location—“in.” The construction tilastossa is purely grammatical and does not denote a distinct field or organization. It contrasts with other cases such as tilastosta (from the statistics) or tilastoon (into the statistics).

Usage and examples: In Finnish scholarly writing, journalism, and data reporting, tilastossa is used to reference data sources or the data itself. Examples include: Tilastossa esitetyt luvut osoittavat kasvua. Tilastossa havaittu trend viittaa selkeään kehitykseen. The phrase functions as a normal inessive form and does not require specialized terminology.
