Tiedostojärjestelmä, in Finnish, translates to "file system" in English. A file system is the method and data structure that an operating system uses to control how data is stored and retrieved. It organizes files and directories on a storage device, such as a hard drive, SSD, or USB drive. Without a file system, data would be stored as a jumbled mess, making it impossible for the operating system to locate specific files.

Key functions of a file system include managing storage space, organizing files and directories, tracking file attributes (like size, creation date, and permissions), and ensuring data integrity. Different operating systems use various types of file systems. For instance, Windows commonly uses NTFS and FAT32, macOS uses APFS and HFS+, and Linux employs Ext4, XFS, and Btrfs. Each file system has its own characteristics regarding performance, security, reliability, and support for file sizes and partition sizes. The choice of file system can impact how efficiently a device stores and accesses data.
