Thuparamaya

Thuparamaya is one of the oldest stupas in Sri Lanka, located in the ancient city of Anuradhapura. It is a significant Buddhist religious site, believed to have been built by King Devanampiyatissa in the 3rd century BCE. The stupa is renowned for enshrining the collarbone relic of the Buddha, making it a revered pilgrimage destination for Buddhists.

The architectural style of Thuparamaya is a characteristic "pattada" stupa, which resembles a bell shape. It is said to be the first stupa to be constructed in the island after the introduction of Buddhism. Over centuries, Thuparamaya has undergone several reconstructions and renovations, reflecting its enduring importance and the continuous devotion of its followers. The surrounding complex includes ancient ruins and meditation areas, adding to its historical and spiritual ambiance. The annual Poya days, particularly Poson Poya which marks the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, see large numbers of devotees visiting Thuparamaya to offer prayers and participate in religious observances. The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its historical and cultural significance.
