Thermotoga

Thermotoga is a genus of extremophilic, anaerobic bacteria in the phylum Thermotogae. Members are characterized by a distinctive outer sheath or toga that envelops the cell, giving the organisms a toga-like appearance. The genus includes several species, such as Thermotoga maritima, Thermotoga neapolitana, Thermotoga elfii and Thermotoga petrophila.

Habitat and physiology

Thermotoga species are Gram-negative, rod-shaped and obligate anaerobes that thrive in high-temperature environments. They grow best at elevated temperatures, typically in the range of about 70 to 90 degrees Celsius, with some strains tolerating near 100 C. They are heterotrophic fermenters that metabolize a variety of carbohydrates and peptides. A major metabolic byproduct is hydrogen gas, produced during fermentation. The toga is a notable morphological feature, an extended, protein-rich enveloping layer that surrounds the cell.

Taxonomy and distribution

Thermotoga belongs to the order Thermotogales and family Thermotogaceae. The genus is widely associated with geothermally heated environments, including marine hydrothermal vents, hot springs and oil reservoirs, where moderate to high salinity can occur. Species show ecological diversity but share a common adaptation to high temperatures and anaerobic conditions.

Genomics and applications

The genome of Thermotoga maritima was among the first bacterial genomes to be sequenced and revealed extensive horizontal gene transfer from archaea, contributing to insights into early thermal adaptation and metabolism. Thermotoga enzymes are of interest for biotechnology due to their thermostability, with potential applications in industrial processes such as biomass deconstruction and biofuel production.

Etymology

The name Thermotoga derives from Greek and Latin roots meaning “heat” and “toga,” referring to the characteristic outer sheath that resembles a garment.
