Tetraetüülplii

Tetraetüülplii is an organolead compound with the chemical formula (C2H5)4Pb. It was historically used as an additive in gasoline to increase its octane rating and prevent engine knocking. The compound is a colorless, oily liquid that is volatile and has a faint sweet odor. Its effectiveness in improving fuel performance led to its widespread adoption in the mid-20th century.

However, the use of tetraetüülplii in gasoline has been largely phased out globally due to severe environmental and health concerns. Lead is a toxic heavy metal that can accumulate in the body, causing neurological damage, developmental problems, and other serious health issues. When leaded gasoline was burned, tetraetüülplii released lead particles into the atmosphere, contaminating soil, water, and air. This widespread pollution posed significant risks to human health, particularly to children. Many countries began banning leaded gasoline in the late 20th century, and its use is now extremely limited. Safer alternatives for octane enhancement, such as ethanol, have replaced tetraetüülplii.
