Tertbutoxy

Tertbutoxy refers to the tert-butoxy group in organic chemistry, an alkoxy substituent with the structure -OC(CH3)3 derived from tert-butanol by removing the proton from the hydroxyl group. The term also appears in reference to the tert-butoxy radical, t-BuO•, a reactive intermediate in radical processes.

As a substituent, the tert-butoxy group confers significant steric bulk and electron-donating character. It is widely encountered in protective group chemistry. Tert-butyl ethers (ROtBu) protect alcohols and are typically removable under acidic conditions. The tert-butoxycarbonyl group (Boc) is a common amine-protecting group formed from di-tert-butyl dicarbonate (Boc2O); Boc deprotection is achieved with acid to reveal the free amine. Tert-butyl esters (–COOtBu) also serve as carboxylate protections that can be cleaved under acidic or thermal conditions.

In radical chemistry, the tert-butoxy radical is a key intermediate. It can be generated by homolysis of di-tert-butyl peroxide or tert-butyl hydroperoxide and is known for abstracting hydrogen atoms and facilitating cleavage of carbon–oxygen bonds. This reactivity underpins various oxidation and polymerization processes, though the radical can also contribute to side reactions in organic synthesis.

Safety and handling notes are important: tert-butyl compounds are generally flammable, and peroxides containing tert-butyl groups can be strong oxidizers or initiators, requiring careful storage and handling.
