In biology and medicine, tendon-based grafts and scaffolds use tendon tissue or tendon-derived materials in repairs or regeneration. Tendons are chosen for their high tensile strength and ability to transmit muscular force. In reconstructive procedures, autografts or allografts may be described as tendon-based approaches.

In biomechanics and modeling, tendon-based models treat tendons as elastic or viscoelastic elements within muscle-tendon units, contributing to force production and energy storage during movement. They are used to study locomotion, running, and other dynamic tasks.

In robotics and prosthetics, tendon-based actuation uses cables or synthetic tendons to transmit force from actuators to joints, providing compliance and lightweight design. It is common in soft robotics, prosthetic hands, and exoskeletal devices.
