Telepathology refers to the practice of transmitting pathological information from one location to another using telecommunications technology. This allows pathologists to consult on cases, analyze slides, and provide diagnoses remotely. The primary method involves digitizing glass microscope slides using a high-resolution scanner, creating a whole slide image (WSI). These digital images are then transmitted over a network to a remote pathologist, who can view and interpret them on a computer screen.
