PBXs are smaller, private systems often used by businesses to manage internal calls and provide external lines.

The technology behind telephone networks has undergone significant transformation. Early systems relied on analog signals transmitted over copper wires. The advent of digital technology revolutionized this, enabling greater capacity, clearer sound quality, and the integration of data services. This digital transition paved the way for the development of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which transmits voice calls as data packets over the internet, offering increased flexibility and often lower costs. Network infrastructure involves various components such as base stations for mobile communication, fiber optic cables for high-speed data transmission, and sophisticated routing equipment to direct calls efficiently. The ongoing evolution of telephone networks continues to focus on improving speed, reliability, and the integration of diverse communication services.
