Telefonkataloger, often referred to as phone books, are directories that list telephone subscribers within a specific geographic area. Historically, these books were printed and distributed to households and businesses. They typically contained names, addresses, and telephone numbers of individuals and companies. The primary purpose was to facilitate communication by providing a readily accessible resource for finding contact information.

The organization of telephone directories was generally alphabetical by last name for residential listings and by business name for commercial listings. Specialized sections might have included emergency service numbers, government agencies, and public service information. The Yellow Pages, a distinct section within many phone books, was dedicated to advertisements and listings of businesses categorized by service or product.

With the advent of the internet and digital communication, the role and prevalence of printed telefonkataloger have significantly diminished. Online search engines and digital directories have largely replaced them as the primary method for finding contact information. Many telecommunication companies have ceased printing physical directories, citing declining demand and environmental concerns. Despite their decline, telephone directories represent a significant part of telecommunication history and a former cornerstone of information access.
