Tekavat

The term "tekavat" is derived from the Punjabi words "tek" meaning "nine" and "avat" meaning "stories" or "narratives," reflecting the nine main characters or archetypes that typically appear in these tales. Tekavat stories are often performed by a group of actors, known as tekavats, who wear colorful costumes and masks to represent these characters.

The stories themselves are a blend of folklore, mythology, and historical events, and they often feature elements of humor, drama, and moral lessons. Tekavat performances are typically held during festivals and special occasions, and they are known for their lively music and dance. The performances are usually accompanied by traditional instruments such as the dhol, a double-headed drum, and the sarangi, a stringed instrument.
