Tearassociated

Tearassociated is a term used in ophthalmology and tear film research to describe elements that originate from, are carried by, or are characteristic of tear fluid. It is not an independent physiological category but an attributive descriptor applied to proteins, lipids, enzymes, signaling molecules, and other constituents found in tears, as well as phenomena that are driven by tear film dynamics.

Tearfluid contains a complex mixture including lysozyme, lactoferrin, lipocalin-1, secretory IgA, mucins, and various lipids. These tearassociated components play roles in antimicrobial defense, lubrication, and ocular surface homeostasis. Proteomic and metabolomic analyses identify tearassociated biomarkers that reflect ocular surface health; inflammatory mediators such as matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) and cytokines can be tearassociated indicators of dry eye or ocular surface disease.

In research and clinical practice, the tearassociated concept supports non-invasive biomarker discovery, monitoring treatment response, and evaluating tear film stability. It is used as a general descriptor rather than a formal taxonomy. The term also informs drug delivery research by considering how tear dynamics affect residence time and absorption on the ocular surface.
