The Taylor series of a function f(x) that is infinitely differentiable at a point a is given by the infinite sum: f(a) + f'(a)(x-a) + f''(a)(x-a)^2/2! + f'''(a)(x-a)^3/3! + ... . The Taylor polynomial of degree n, denoted by P_n(x), is a finite truncation of this series, consisting of the first n+1 terms.

The accuracy of the Taylor approximation generally increases as the degree of the polynomial increases and as the point x gets closer to the point of expansion a. The remainder term, which quantifies the error between the function and its Taylor polynomial, can be bounded using Taylor's theorem. This approximation is fundamental in many areas of mathematics, physics, and engineering, enabling the simplification of complex calculations and the analysis of function behavior.
