Taveta

Taveta is a town in southern Kenya, located in Taita-Taveta County near the border with Tanzania. It lies at the foot of the Taveta Hills and functions as a local commercial center for the surrounding rural communities. It is part of Taveta Constituency and serves as a gateway to parts of the Tsavo ecosystem and adjacent protected areas.

The area is a semi-arid zone with a warm climate and a distinct wet season. Savanna and scrub vegetation characterizes the landscape, supporting small-scale farming and pastoral activities around Taveta.

The Taveta people, a Bantu community, have long inhabited the region. Taveta grew as a market town during the colonial era and developed as a cross-border trading point with Tanzania.

The local economy centers on agriculture, including coffee, maize, beans and vegetables, along with dairy farming and livestock. Cross-border trade with Tanzania is important, and markets operate weekly, linking Kenyan and Tanzanian traders. Tourism related to Tsavo National Park and the Kasigau Hills also contributes modestly to income.

Taveta is connected by road to surrounding towns and serves as a service hub with schools, healthcare facilities, and markets. Its proximity to the border supports cross-border commerce and cultural exchange.

Nearby natural areas include the Taveta Hills and Kasigau Mountains, home to conservation projects such as the Kasigau Wildlife Corridor that links habitats across the border.
