Tarkistuskoodit

Tarkistuskoodit, known in English as check digits or check characters, are a form of redundancy check used to detect accidental errors in data transmission or entry. They are appended to a piece of data, such as an identification number or a code, and are calculated using a specific algorithm. When the data is read or processed, the check digit is recalculated. If the recalculated check digit does not match the original one, it indicates that an error has likely occurred.

The primary purpose of tarkistuskoodit is to catch common errors like single-digit transpositions (e.g., 123 becoming 132) or single-digit errors (e.g., 123 becoming 128). They do not guarantee the detection of all possible errors, but they significantly improve data integrity.
