Tarisian is a fictional language developed for the world of Taris, a planet featured in a contemporary science fiction setting. It is described as the native tongue of the Tarisians and is used in daily conversation, literature, and ceremonial oratory within the narrative. As a constructed language (conlang), Tarisian was designed to support a coherent culture, with distinctive pronunciation, syntax, and vocabulary that reflect social stratification and regional variation.

Origins and classification: In-universe history places Tarisian's emergence among early trading communities, with later consolidation during periods of regional governance. In the language system, Tarisian is typically treated as agglutinative and predominantly SVO (subject-verb-object), though flexible word order is permitted for emphasis.

Phonology and writing: The sound system comprises five vowel phonemes and a consonant inventory featuring stops, fricatives, nasals, and approximants. Stress is usually on the penultimate syllable. Modern texts tend to use a Latin-based alphabet; earlier in-world inscriptions employ a local syllabary.

Grammar: Nouns mark number and case through suffixes; adjectives follow nouns; verbs express tense, aspect, and mood via affixes and clitics. Pronouns include inclusive and exclusive forms. Reduplication and affix stacking are used to indicate nuance such as aspect or evidentiality.

In-story, it functions as the language of administration, literature, and ritual speech, with education and media contributing to ongoing language development and fan-created resources.
