Tappisäätimiä, often translated as tappet adjusters or valve lash adjusters, are mechanical components used in internal combustion engines to maintain a specific clearance, known as valve lash, between the valve train components. This clearance is crucial for proper engine operation, allowing for thermal expansion of engine parts without causing the valves to remain open or closed inappropriately.

The primary function of tappisäätimiä is to compensate for the expansion and contraction of engine parts due to temperature changes. Without them, the valve lash would vary significantly, leading to issues such as reduced engine performance, increased fuel consumption, noise, and premature wear of valve train components.

There are two main types of tappisäätimiä: mechanical and hydraulic. Mechanical tappisäätimiä require periodic adjustment by a mechanic to maintain the correct valve lash. Hydraulic tappisäätimiä, on the other hand, use engine oil pressure to automatically adjust and maintain the valve lash. These are more common in modern engines due to their self-adjusting nature and contribution to quieter engine operation.

Incorrect valve lash can lead to a variety of problems, including burnt valves, worn camshaft lobes, and reduced compression.
