Tappisolutyyppejä refers to different classifications or categories of killer cells within the immune system. These cells are crucial for innate immunity, meaning they provide a rapid, non-specific defense against infected or cancerous cells. The primary and most well-known type is the Natural Killer (NK) cell. NK cells recognize and kill target cells without prior sensitization, a key feature of innate immunity. They achieve this by detecting the absence of MHC class I molecules on target cells, which is often a sign of viral infection or tumor development, or by recognizing stress ligands.

Another category, though sometimes considered a subset or related to NK cells, are the Cytotoxic T Lymphocytes (CTLs), also known as CD8+ T cells. While CTLs are part of adaptive immunity due to their antigen-specific recognition, their cytotoxic function is directly comparable to that of NK cells. They recognize viral peptides presented by MHC class I molecules on infected cells and eliminate them. The distinction lies in the specificity of recognition and the requirement for prior exposure and activation for CTLs, whereas NK cells are ready to act immediately.

There are also other less common or more specialized types of cytotoxic cells. For example, Gamma Delta T cells (γδ T cells) bridge innate and adaptive immunity and can exhibit cytotoxic activity, often recognizing non-peptide antigens or stressed cells. Additionally, certain subtypes of macrophages and neutrophils can also display cytotoxic properties in specific contexts, though they are not typically the primary focus when discussing "tappisolutyyppejä." The classification often emphasizes the primary cytotoxic effector cells of the immune system.
