The TRIPS Agreement, officially known as the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, is an international legal agreement administered by the World Trade Organization (WTO). It was established in 1995 as part of the Uruguay Round of trade negotiations. The primary purpose of the TRIPS Agreement is to establish minimum standards for intellectual property rights protection among WTO member countries.

It covers a broad range of intellectual property rights, including copyright and related rights, trademarks, geographical indications, industrial designs, patents, and the layout designs of integrated circuits. The agreement also addresses issues related to the enforcement of intellectual property rights, dispute settlement, and the transfer of technology. Countries that are members of the WTO are obligated to implement the provisions of the TRIPS Agreement into their national laws.

The TRIPS Agreement aims to promote fair competition and encourage innovation and the transfer of technology. It seeks to ensure that intellectual property rights are adequately protected, thereby facilitating the flow of trade in goods and services that rely on these rights. Developing countries were given transition periods to implement the agreement's provisions, and there are provisions for technical assistance to aid them in meeting their obligations. The agreement has been a significant step in harmonizing intellectual property laws globally.
