TRHR2

Thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptor 2, also known as TRHR2, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the TRHR2 gene. This gene is located on chromosome 8. TRHR2 is a G protein-coupled receptor that is activated by thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH). TRH is a peptide hormone produced in the hypothalamus that plays a role in regulating the release of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) from the anterior pituitary gland.

TRHR2 is one of two known TRH receptors, the other being TRHR1. While TRHR1 is primarily expressed in the anterior pituitary and plays a key role in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, TRHR2 has a broader tissue distribution, being found in the brain, heart, and gastrointestinal tract, among other tissues. The specific physiological functions of TRHR2 are still being investigated, but it is thought to be involved in various processes beyond thyroid regulation. Research suggests potential roles in mood, anxiety, appetite, and cardiovascular function. Understanding the distinct roles of TRHR1 and TRHR2 is an ongoing area of scientific inquiry.
