TOTPpõhised

TOTPpõhised refers to a method of authentication that utilizes Time-based One-Time Passwords (TOTP). This system is a widely adopted form of two-factor authentication (2FA) or multi-factor authentication (MFA). TOTP algorithms generate a unique, short-lived passcode that changes at regular intervals, typically every 30 or 60 seconds. These codes are generated independently by both the user's authentication device (often a smartphone app or a hardware token) and the server they are attempting to log into.

The core principle behind TOTPpõhised is the synchronization of a shared secret key and a time counter between the server and the client. When a user attempts to log in, they provide their username, password, and the current TOTP code displayed on their device. The server performs the same calculation using its synchronized time and the shared secret. If the generated code matches the one provided by the user, access is granted. This means that even if an attacker obtains the user's password, they would still need the current, time-sensitive TOTP code to gain access, significantly enhancing security. Popular applications like Google Authenticator and Authy utilize the TOTP standard.
