TDMAperusteet refers to the fundamental principles of Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA). TDMA is a channel access method for shared networks that allows multiple users to share a single communication channel by dividing the channel into different time slots. Each user is assigned a specific time slot during which they can transmit their data. This method enables efficient use of the available bandwidth by interleaving transmissions from different users.

The core concept of TDMA involves synchronizing the transmissions of multiple devices. A TDMA system assigns a fixed time slot to each user, and they can only transmit during their allocated slot. This prevents collisions that would occur if multiple users tried to transmit simultaneously. The duration of each time slot is typically short, and the cycle of time slots repeats. This allows for a high degree of statistical multiplexing, meaning that the system can support many users even if they are not all transmitting at the exact same time.

TDMA is widely used in various communication systems, including early mobile phone networks like GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). In GSM, a single radio channel is divided into eight time slots, and up to eight users can share that channel by taking turns transmitting and receiving. The efficiency of TDMA depends on the traffic patterns and the number of users. If users have very bursty traffic, TDMA can be highly efficient. However, if users have continuous data streams, the overhead of switching between users and idle time slots might reduce its effectiveness compared to other multiple access techniques.
