Tähestikeks

Tähestikeks is the Estonian word for "constellations". In astronomy, a constellation is a group of stars that appears to form a recognizable pattern or shape in the night sky when viewed from Earth. These patterns are often named after mythological figures, animals, or everyday objects. Historically, constellations served as important tools for navigation, timekeeping, and storytelling across different cultures.

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially recognizes 88 constellations, each with defined boundaries that cover the entire celestial sphere. While the stars within a constellation may appear close together from our perspective, they are often vast distances apart in reality. The perceived patterns are a result of our line of sight.

Estonian culture, like many others, has its own traditional names and interpretations for various constellations, often reflecting local folklore and beliefs. These traditional names may differ from the official IAU designations. For example, the prominent group of stars known as Ursa Major in the West is often referred to by different names in various cultures, including its Estonian traditional appellations.
