Süüteküünlast

Süüteküünlast, also known as a glow plug, is a heating device used in diesel engines. Its primary function is to preheat the combustion chamber, ensuring easier engine starting, especially in cold weather conditions. Diesel engines rely on compression ignition, where the heat generated by compressing air ignites the fuel. However, when the engine is cold, this compression heat may not be sufficient to initiate combustion reliably.

A süüteküünlast typically consists of a heating element encased in a metal sheath. When the engine is turned on, or when the ignition is activated in cold temperatures, an electric current passes through the heating element. This causes the element to glow red-hot, significantly increasing the temperature inside the cylinder. This elevated temperature helps to ignite the injected diesel fuel more readily, preventing issues like hard starting, rough idling, or excessive white smoke which can occur when an engine is cold.

Modern diesel engines often have sophisticated control systems that manage glow plug operation, ensuring optimal preheating and sometimes continuing to provide heat for a short period after the engine has started to improve combustion stability.
