Súðavíks

Súðavíks is a former municipality and currently a village in the Westfjords of Iceland. It is located on the southern shore of the Álftafjörður bay, within the larger Ísafjarðardjúp fjord. Historically, Súðavíks was a significant fishing settlement, and its economy was largely based on the sea. The village experienced a tragic avalanche in January 1995 that destroyed many houses and claimed several lives, profoundly impacting the community.

Following the avalanche, Súðavíks underwent significant rebuilding and restructuring. The fishing industry remains important, with aquaculture also playing a role in the local economy. The village has a small population and retains a close-knit community feel. Its scenic location amidst the dramatic landscapes of the Westfjords makes it a destination for tourists, particularly during the summer months. Visitors are drawn to the natural beauty of the surrounding fjords, opportunities for hiking, and the chance to experience a more remote part of Iceland. Súðavíks is accessible by road, though winter conditions can make travel challenging. The proximity to Ísafjörður, the largest settlement in the Westfjords, provides access to more amenities and services.
