Säiliövirtausreaktori, often abbreviated as CSTR (Continuous Stirred-Tank Reactor), is a type of reactor used in chemical engineering. It is characterized by its continuous operation and the presence of a mixing mechanism, typically an agitator. Reactants are continuously fed into the reactor, and products are continuously withdrawn. The mixing ensures that the composition of the contents within the reactor is uniform at any given point in time, meaning the concentration of reactants and products is the same throughout the vessel. This uniformity is a key distinguishing feature compared to plug flow reactors.

The ideal CSTR operates at steady state, where the rate of inflow of reactants equals the rate of outflow of products, and the reaction conditions are constant. Temperature, pressure, and concentration are uniform throughout the reactor volume. The design of a CSTR takes into account factors such as reaction kinetics, desired conversion, and heat transfer requirements. They are often used in series to achieve higher conversions, as the effluent from one reactor serves as the feed to the next. CSTRs are versatile and can be used for a wide range of chemical reactions, including liquid-phase and gas-phase reactions, and are particularly suitable for processes where precise temperature control is important due to their excellent mixing capabilities.
