Szénhidrogéntárolók, often translated as hydrocarbon storage facilities, are critical infrastructure for storing and managing large quantities of oil, natural gas, and refined petroleum products. These facilities play a vital role in ensuring energy security and market stability by providing a buffer between production and consumption. The types of hydrocarbon storage vary significantly depending on the substance being stored and the required capacity.

For crude oil and refined products, storage typically involves large above-ground tanks, often constructed from steel. These tanks can range in size from small to enormous, with capacities measured in tens of thousands of barrels or more. Strategic locations for these tanks include near oil fields, refineries, and distribution terminals. Underground storage, such as in salt caverns or depleted oil and gas reservoirs, is also employed for longer-term and larger-scale storage, particularly for strategic petroleum reserves.

Natural gas is primarily stored in underground formations, including depleted gas fields, porous rock formations, and salt caverns. These geological formations are natural reservoirs that can be adapted for gas storage. Above-ground facilities like liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanks are used for storing natural gas that has been cooled to a liquid state, enabling easier transportation and storage in areas lacking pipeline infrastructure. The design and operation of these storage facilities are subject to stringent safety regulations to prevent leaks, fires, and environmental contamination.
