Szekundér
Szekundér is a term with roots in fencing and dueling, referring to a second or assistant. In the context of a duel, a sekundér acted as a witness, mediator, and advisor to one of the principals. They were responsible for ensuring the duel was conducted according to agreed-upon rules, and often acted as a go-between for negotiations or apologies that could prevent the duel altogether. The sekundér would also carry the seconds of the dueling parties, typically pistols or swords, and ensure they were in proper condition. Beyond their role in the duel itself, a sekundér might also be called upon to arbitrate disputes between the principals outside of the formal combat. The term has seen some modern usage in informal contexts, though its original meaning is tied to historical practices of honor and combat.
