Szénsavanyagok

Szénsavanyagok is a Hungarian term that translates to carbonic substances or carbonic materials. This broad category encompasses a wide range of chemical compounds that are either derived from or related to carbonic acid (H2CO3). Carbonic acid itself is a weak acid formed when carbon dioxide (CO2) dissolves in water.

The most common and significant szénsavanyagok are carbonates and bicarbonates (also known as hydrogen carbonates). Carbonates are salts or esters of carbonic acid, with the general formula CO3^2-. Bicarbonates are salts or esters where one acidic hydrogen of carbonic acid has been replaced by a cation, with the general formula HCO3^-. Examples include calcium carbonate (CaCO3), found in limestone and seashells, and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), commonly known as baking soda.

Beyond simple salts, the term can also refer to organic compounds containing the carbonate functional group (O-CO-O) or carbamate functional group (N-CO-O).
