Széniparban refers to the industrial applications and processes involving coal. Coal, a combustible black or brownish-black sedimentary rock composed primarily of carbon and hydrocarbons, has been a cornerstone of industrial development for centuries. Its primary use has historically been as a fuel source for electricity generation and industrial heating. Power plants burn coal to produce steam, which drives turbines to generate electricity. In industries like steel production, coal, particularly in the form of coke, is essential for smelting iron ore.

Beyond its role as a fuel, coal is also a source of various chemical byproducts through processes like coal gasification and liquefaction. Coal gasification produces synthesis gas, a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, which can be used to produce ammonia for fertilizers, methanol, and other chemicals. Coal liquefaction converts coal into liquid fuels, offering an alternative to petroleum-based products, though this process is often energy-intensive and environmentally challenging.

The extraction of coal occurs through mining, either surface mining or underground mining, depending on the geological conditions. Both methods have significant environmental impacts, including habitat destruction, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.
