Széllégsebesség, often translated as wind speed, refers to the rate at which air is moving past a given point. It is a fundamental meteorological parameter with significant implications for weather forecasting, aviation, maritime operations, and renewable energy.

Wind speed is typically measured in units such as meters per second (m/s), kilometers per hour (km/h), miles per hour (mph), or knots. These measurements are usually taken at a standard height of 10 meters above the ground to ensure consistency and comparability across different locations.

Various instruments are used to measure wind speed, with anemometers being the most common. Different types of anemometers exist, including cup anemometers, propeller anemometers, and sonic anemometers, each utilizing different principles to detect and quantify air movement.

The Beaufort wind force scale is a widely used empirical measure that relates wind speed to observed conditions at sea or on land. It classifies wind speeds into twelve categories, from calm to hurricane force, based on the visual effects of the wind.
