Szállítófehérjéknek, commonly known as transport proteins, are a group of proteins found in biological membranes that play a crucial role in the movement of ions and molecules across these membranes. They are essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis, nutrient uptake, waste removal, and signal transduction. These proteins can be categorized into several types based on their mechanism of action and the substances they transport.

One major category is channel proteins. These form hydrophilic pores through the lipid bilayer, allowing specific ions or small molecules to pass through passively, following their concentration gradients. Examples include ion channels for sodium, potassium, and calcium, as well as aquaporins for water.

Another important group is carrier proteins. Unlike channel proteins, carrier proteins bind to the substance they transport and undergo a conformational change to move it across the membrane. This process can be either passive (facilitated diffusion), where no energy is required and transport follows the concentration gradient, or active, where energy, usually in the form of ATP, is consumed to move substances against their concentration gradients. Examples of active transport carriers include the sodium-potassium pump and glucose transporters.

Pumps are a specific type of carrier protein that uses metabolic energy to transport molecules or ions against their concentration or electrochemical gradients. This active process is vital for establishing and maintaining concentration differences across membranes, which are fundamental for many cellular functions.

The specificity of transport proteins is a key feature, meaning each protein typically transports only one or a small group of related substances. This selectivity is crucial for regulating the internal environment of cells and organelles, ensuring that the correct molecules are present in the right concentrations at the right time. Dysfunctional transport proteins are implicated in various diseases, highlighting their critical importance in health.
