Syvänmerihydrotermisten, a Finnish term, translates to "deep-sea hydrothermal" in English. It refers to the geological features and phenomena found on the ocean floor where geothermally heated water emerges from beneath the Earth's crust. These vents are typically found along mid-ocean ridges and other geologically active areas, often in the deep ocean.

The water emitted from these hydrothermal vents is rich in dissolved minerals and chemicals, such as hydrogen sulfide, methane, and metals like iron and zinc. This unique chemical environment supports a diverse and specialized ecosystem. Instead of relying on sunlight for energy, the organisms living around these vents, known as chemosynthetic communities, utilize chemical reactions, primarily the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide, to produce energy.
