Sytoskeltoa

Sytoskeltoa is a Finnish term that translates to "cytoskeleton" in English. The cytoskeleton is a complex, dynamic network of protein filaments and tubules in the cytoplasm of many living cells, giving them shape and coherence. It is composed of three main types of filaments: microfilaments, intermediate filaments, and microtubules. These components work together to maintain cell shape, enable cell movement, and play a crucial role in intracellular transport.

Microfilaments, also known as actin filaments, are the thinnest of the cytoskeletal elements. They are involved in muscle contraction, cell crawling, and cytoplasmic streaming. Intermediate filaments are rope-like structures that provide mechanical strength to cells and tissues, helping them resist stretching and compression. Microtubules are the thickest filaments and are hollow tubes made of tubulin. They are essential for cell division, forming the spindle fibers that separate chromosomes, and also serve as tracks for motor proteins to transport vesicles and organelles within the cell.
