Syrgaskoncentration is the amount or proportion of oxygen gas (O2) present in a given mixture. In gas mixtures, it is typically described by the mole fraction (X_O2) or by a volume percentage, and is often expressed as a partial pressure (P_O2). The term is used across disciplines such as environmental science, medicine, and industrial gas engineering. It is distinct from dissolved oxygen in liquids, which is measured in different units such as milligrams per liter or percent saturation.

Common units and reference values include percent by volume (e.g., 21% O2 in ambient air) and partial pressure (about 0.21 atm at sea level). In medical practice, inspired oxygen fraction (FiO2) is varied to meet patient needs, ranging from room air (~21% O2) up to 100% in some therapies. In diving, aviation, and industrial processes, specific O2 fractions are engineered to balance respiration, fire risk, and oxidation rates. For dissolved oxygen in water, concentration is reported in mg/L or as percent saturation, influenced by temperature, salinity, and atmospheric exchange.

Measurement methods include electrochemical sensors (Clark-type sensors), optical sensors that use phosphorescence quenching, and solid-state zirconia sensors for high-temperature or pressurized environments. For dissolved oxygen, standard methods include Winkler titration and optical or electrochemical DO sensors.

Applications and safety considerations span medical respiration devices, anesthesia, life-support systems, environmental monitoring, welding and metal processing, and industrial gas handling. High O2 levels raise combustion and fire hazards, while low levels can lead to hypoxia, underscoring the need for precise control and reliable sensors.
