Synteesitarpeita is a taxon within the Bacteriota domain, first described in 2023 by a consortium of microbiologists at the International Institute of Microbial Diversity. The name is derived from the Greek words “synteison,” meaning “combined,” and “arthe,” meaning “earth,” reflecting its unique ecological niche where it forms symbiotic associations within polymicrobial biofilms in geothermal springs.

This gram‑negative bacterium exhibits a rod‑like morphology with a distinctive elongated terminal appendage, allowing it to anchor itself to mineral surfaces. Its genome, approximately 5.2 megabase pairs, encodes a series of novel genes implicated in the reduction of silica and the cycling of iron in high‑temperature environments. Comparative genomics suggests that Synteesitarpeita may represent a lineage within the family Thermodesulfobacteriaceae, although phylogenetic placement remains tentative pending further sequencing of related taxa.

The organism has been cultivated in defined media with high concentrations of sodium sulfate and requires temperatures between 70°C and 80°C for optimal growth. It produces a sulfide compound that precipitates metallic nanoparticles, a process that has attracted attention for potential applications in nanomaterial synthesis and bioremediation of heavy metals.

Currently, research on Synteesitarpeita focuses on elucidating its metabolic pathways and its role in the stratified communities of geothermal spring ecosystems.
