Syntacticdiscourse is a field within linguistics that investigates the interface between syntax and discourse. It examines how syntactic structure at the sentence level encodes and constrains discourse functions such as topic, focus, given-new information, and reference, and how the surrounding discourse context constrains or selects among possible syntactic realizations.

Core topics include information structure (topic versus focus), referential form and anaphora, and sentence-level devices like fronting, cleft constructions, and dislocations that signal discourse status. The study also considers how discourse markers and coherence relations (such as cause, contrast, elaboration) are realized syntactically, and how cross-sentential dependencies (anaphora, bridging) interact with syntax.

Methods range from theoretical analyses of the syntax–semantics–discourse interface to empirical work using corpora, experimental processing, and cross-linguistic comparison. Researchers may annotate multi-sentential texts with information-structure labels, parse trees, and discourse relations, and they may build computational models to predict syntactic choices given discourse context or to generate discourse-aware text.

Applications extend to natural language processing, where syntacticdiscourse informs discourse-aware parsing, pronoun resolution, and text generation, as well as to psycholinguistics and language typology, contributing to understanding how languages encode discourse structure through syntax.

Challenges include modeling long-range discourse effects, achieving cross-linguistic generalization, and integrating prosody, gesture, and context into syntactic analyses.
