Sveitarstjórnarstigi refers to the level of local government in Iceland. This level of governance is responsible for administering municipal affairs within a defined geographical area. Icelandic municipalities, known as sveitarfélög, are the primary units at this administrative tier. Each sveitarfélag is governed by a sveitarstjórn, which is a democratically elected council.

The responsibilities of the sveitarstjórnarstigi are broad and include providing essential public services. These services typically encompass town planning and zoning, waste management, water and sewage systems, and local road maintenance. Additionally, municipalities are often involved in the operation of schools, kindergartens, libraries, and cultural institutions within their jurisdiction. The autonomy of local governments in Iceland is a key characteristic of the sveitarstjórnarstigi.
