Sveiseelektroder, also known as welding electrodes, are consumable rods or wires used in arc welding processes. They serve multiple crucial functions in creating a strong and durable weld. Primarily, the electrode conducts the electric current from the welding machine to the workpiece, creating the arc necessary to melt the base metals. Additionally, many electrodes contain a flux coating. This coating is designed to vaporize and create a shielding gas atmosphere around the molten weld pool, protecting it from atmospheric contaminants like oxygen and nitrogen, which can weaken the weld. The flux also provides deoxidizers to purify the molten metal and can contain alloying elements to enhance the weld metal's properties. Some electrodes are bare wire, used in processes like gas metal arc welding (GMAW) or gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) where a separate shielding gas is supplied. The type of electrode used depends on the welding process, the type of metal being joined, and the desired weld characteristics. Common types include shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) electrodes, which are coated with flux, and bare wire electrodes used in other processes. The selection of the correct electrode is a critical factor in achieving a successful and high-quality weld.
