Surnadal

Surnadal is a municipality in Møre og Romsdal county, Norway, located in the Nordmøre district. The administrative centre is the village of Surnadal. The municipality covers a varied landscape that centers on the Surna valley, with farmland in the lowlands and forested, mountainous terrain toward the east.

The Surna river runs through the area, shaping settlement patterns and providing resources for agriculture and forestry. The western part reaches toward the coast, while the eastern areas rise into higher terrain that forms part of the interior mountain region.

The municipality was established in 1838 as part of the formannskapsdistrikt system. It later expanded through mergers with neighboring areas during the 1960s reform. Local government is provided by a municipal council, with a mayor and administrative staff.

The economy relies on agriculture, forestry, and small-scale industry, with hydropower production on the Surna river and related services contributing to employment. Tourism is supported by outdoor recreation, such as hiking and fishing, and by the cultural life of the community.
