Surface Submersibles are watercraft designed to operate on the surface of the water while also possessing the capability to submerge below the surface for a limited duration or depth. This dual functionality distinguishes them from traditional surface vessels and fully submersible submarines. Their design often incorporates ballast tanks that can be flooded to reduce buoyancy and allow for submersion, and then emptied to return to the surface. Power for propulsion can be provided by an internal combustion engine when on the surface and by electric motors or other closed-circuit systems when submerged.

The applications of surface submersibles are varied. They are utilized in scientific research for tasks such as marine biology studies, oceanographic surveys, and environmental monitoring. In military and security contexts, they can be employed for reconnaissance, mine detection, and special operations. Some recreational and tourist ventures also use surface submersibles to offer unique underwater viewing experiences without the extensive infrastructure or training required for traditional submarines. The operational depth and endurance of surface submersibles are typically less than that of dedicated submarines, reflecting a design compromise prioritizing surface efficiency and accessibility.
