Supraspinousligamentit

Supraspinousligamentit are fibrous bands that run along the tips of the spinous processes of the vertebral column, connecting each vertebra to the one below it. In English anatomy, they are referred to as the supraspinous ligaments; together they form the supraspinous ligamentous system along the midline of the back.

Anatomy: The supraspinous ligaments extend from the seventh cervical vertebra (C7) down to the sacrum. In the cervical region they merge with the broader nuchal ligament, effectively replacing the supraspinous ligament in that area. The ligaments become thicker in the thoracic and lumbar regions, where the spinous processes are more prominent. They lie along the posterior aspect of the midline and connect the tips of adjacent spinous processes, functioning alongside the interspinous ligaments in the posterior column.

Function: The primary role of the supraspinous ligaments is to limit flexion of the spine and contribute to posterior stability during forward bending. They help maintain alignment of the spinous processes and work in concert with other posterior spinal ligaments to stabilize the vertebral column.

Clinical significance: Strains or tears can occur with sudden hyperflexion injuries, such as whiplash. Degenerative changes with aging can reduce ligamentous elasticity and contribute to back pain. On imaging, thickening or calcification may be observed in some individuals.

Relation to other structures: In the cervical region the supraspinous ligament is continuous with the nuchal ligament. The supraspinous ligaments are part of the posterior ligamentous system of the spine, alongside the interspinous ligaments, ligamentum flavum, and posterior longitudinal ligament.
