The optic chiasm is the X-shaped structure where the optic nerves from each eye cross over. Therefore, the supraoptic region is situated directly superior to this crucial visual pathway.

This anatomical area is significant because it contains the supraoptic nucleus, a key component of the hypothalamus. The supraoptic nucleus is a collection of neurons that produce antidiuretic hormone (ADH), also known as vasopressin, and oxytocin. These hormones are then transported down the axons of the neurons through the pituitary stalk to the posterior pituitary gland, where they are stored and released into the bloodstream.

The supraoptic nucleus plays a vital role in regulating water balance in the body. ADH acts on the kidneys to increase water reabsorption, which helps maintain hydration and blood pressure. Oxytocin, on the other hand, is involved in social bonding, reproduction, and childbirth.
