Sukupuolisolut

Sukupuolisolut, also known as gametes, are specialized reproductive cells that fuse during sexual reproduction. In most multicellular organisms, there are two types of gametes: male gametes (sperm) and female gametes (ova or eggs). These cells are haploid, meaning they contain half the number of chromosomes found in somatic cells (body cells). This reduction in chromosome number is achieved through a process called meiosis.

The production of sperm is called spermatogenesis and occurs in the male gonads, the testes. Oogenesis is the process of egg production and takes place in the female gonads, the ovaries. When a sperm and an egg unite, a process called fertilization occurs, forming a diploid cell called a zygote. The zygote contains a full set of chromosomes, half from each parent, and it develops into a new individual. The genetic material within gametes is crucial for inheritance, passing on traits from one generation to the next. The fusion of gametes ensures genetic diversity within a population, as each offspring receives a unique combination of genes from its parents. The existence of distinct male and female gametes is a fundamental aspect of sexual reproduction in a vast array of species.
