Substrutture

Substrutture is the plural form of substruttura, a term used in Italian to denote a component that lies beneath or forms the underlying framework of a system. In general, a substruttura is a foundational element whose characteristics influence the behavior and properties of the whole.

In engineering and architecture, substrutture describe the parts of a building or structure that support and transfer loads to the ground, including foundations, footings, basements, and subfloor assemblies. They are distinguished from the superstructure, which is the visible part above ground, such as walls, floors, and roofs.

In materials science and chemistry, substrutture can refer to a substructure of a molecule or material; for example, recurring atomic motifs within a larger molecular framework, or the arrangement of grains and phases within a polycrystalline material. In cheminformatics, substructure searches identify molecules containing a particular motif.

In computer science and graph theory, a substruttura may denote a substructure such as a subgraph or modular component of a larger data model, used in analysis, simulation, or design.

Terminology: While substrutture is understood in Italian contexts, many writers prefer sottostruttura for the strict Italian term. The English counterpart “substructure” is more common in international use. The precise meaning depends on the field and context.
